Fall in love
with falling.
This week’s newsletter is a sharing on a realization I had a few years ago from a very common activity.
Ice skating.
I’m 31 years old and I have skated probably less than five times, and because of this realization, I managed to learn how to on my own within one session.
Here is how I did it.
As usual, I was out there, wobbling and overthinking every movement, worried I’d fall flat on the ice in front of everyone.
And you know what? I fell a lot.
Every careful, cautious step I took was another chance to stumble, to feel my feet slip out from under me.
Then I noticed something.
The people who seemed the least afraid, the ones skating fast and leaning into every turn, hardly fell at all. They weren’t hesitating or holding back, and because they weren’t afraid to go all in, they kept their balance.
It suddenly hit me.
The more you fear falling, the more likely you are to fall.
We fail most often when we’re being too careful. When we focus on not messing up, we hesitate, second-guess, and hold back just enough to lose momentum.
But when we go for it—when we’re bold, when we lean into what we’re doing—the balance comes naturally. The fear fades, and we become grounded.
That’s true on the ice, and it’s true in life.
From that moment on, I stepped away from the railings and tried my best to go fast and try to fall.
Guess what.
I skated.
When we’re bold, we’re focused on the goal, not on the pitfalls along the way. And it’s that focus, that willingness to give it all without holding back, that actually keeps us steady.
So, here’s what I learned: if you want to succeed, stop trying to avoid failing.
Go all in, be bold, and trust that each step will lead you forward.
You’ll be amazed at how solid the ground feels when you’re no longer afraid to hit it.
